Eagle River, Alaska
In the land of the midnight sun, the great land
that is known as Alaska offers spectacular vistas to its inhabitants and
visitors. And the Eagle River area offers a full taste of all that Alaska has
to offer. Here, is the natural habitat for moose, the black and brown bear, the
Dall sheep, mountain goats and numerous other small Alaskan animals.
Chugiak - Eagle River stands as the gateway to
Chugach State Park, one of America's four largest state parks, providing more
than 495,000 acres of natural beauty. This park is pristine in its beauty, and
provides a bridge between the city of Anchorage, and the wilderness that is
Alaska. The park provides mountain hiking and ski trails through alpine tundra.
Eagle River provides canoeing, kayaking and guided raft trips down its scenic
course. You can camp along the banks at the Eagle River State Campground, and
enjoy the fishing. Mirror Lake Wayside in the summer offers fishing and is
often full of swimmers due to its shallow lakebed retaining the warmth of the
summer sun.
The family can enjoy an afternoon hike to
Thunderbird Falls Trailhead to see spectacular falls in the narrow
canyon.
The Eklutna Lake offers excellent views of
wildlife and provides all the power for Anchorage. This is the largest lake
in this area, and is fed by the Eklutna Glacier. The lake provides several
camping, picnicking and hiking spots for residents and visitors.
At the northern end of the Eagle River, is the
Eklutna Village Athabascan Park. This is the site of the first building in
Anchorage, the Russian Orthodox Church, built in the 1830's. Of special
interest are the brightly colored spirit houses that rise above the graves in
the ancestral burial ground near the church. It is not just the wilderness that
Eagle River has to offer. Many festivals are hosted annually throughout the
year, providing many community-sponsored events. And the town itself has a six-
screen movie theater, a bowling alley, an Olympic - sized skating rink, a
swimming pool, and a museum.
